Coots Gateway PC

Coots I found the specs for your machine:

http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/gateway-sx2803-us20p/4507-3118_7-34852704.html?tag=mncol;lwrspecs

The good news is that you do have PCI Express expansion slots:

Expansion Slot(s) 1.0 (total) / 1.0 (free) x Processor - DIMM 240-pin,
1.0 (total) / 0.0 (free) x PCI Express x1,
1.0 (total) / 1.0 (free) x Memory,
4.0 PCI Express x16

But the bad news is that you only have a 220Watt power supply:

Power
Device Type Power supply .
Power Provided 220.0 Watt

So if you decide to upgrade with a new graphics card you most likely will need a power supply upgrade as well.

My advise is to save your money torwards a new gaming machine instead of dumping more money into this one. Sell this one to your little brother, your mom, or your friend at work. Then go for a machine that will let you play other high end games. Eventually you will want to play something else other than WOT.

Web site Server upgrade

Just got this from our web site hosting provider today:

We're pleased to inform you that the server hosting your knifeon.com website will be undergoing a major software upgrade, from CentOS 5 to CentOS 6, within the next 48 hours.

This upgrade includes newer software packages (including Python, Perl and gcc), as well as all the security and performance benefits that come along with CentOS 6. In addition to this, the server will be redeployed with a different file system type simultaneously, further increasing performance.

Although a bulk of the upgrades to your server are being done with it online and functional, in order to safely finalize these changes our Administrators will need to temporarily take your server offline in the early morning hours. Barring any extenuating circumstances this outage should only last about 2 hours.

Please note that while we do not anticipate your software having problems post-update, it may be required to re-compile any module(s) you are using to take advantage of the newer included libraries. We suggest reviewing your site afterward to verify that it is functioning as it should.

If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to contact us

X79 or Z77 Chipset?

With the release of the new Intel Z77 chipset, there are new motherboards and processor combinations to consider. You may be confused on which of these trains you should jump on. Here's the lowdown:

The Z79 supports the new Ivy Bridge CPU 6 core processors. 6 cores! Very cool. But do you really want to spend $600+ for a 6 core CPU? Are there any applications or games that will use 6 cores? I doubt it. Might be too early to invest in 6 core cpu's...

The X79 supports quad channel memory compared to only dual channel memory with the Z77. This means that the X79 supports a Max of 64 GB of ram vs Z77 Max of 32GB ram. So you have to ask yourself, how much memory do you really need today? For a gaming machine do you really need more than 32Gb? No... Will 32Gb be enough for a few years? I hope so.

Next difference is PCI pipelines. X79 has 40 PCI pipelines vs the Z77 16 PCI pipelines. What does that mean? Well how many video cards are you going to run? The Z77 chipset supports sli at 8x -8x vs the X79 at 16x -16x. The new top of the line video cards out will work just fine with 8x 8x pci-e 3.0

QUOTE:Ultimately what is clear is that 8GB/sec of bandwidth, either in the form of PCIe 2 x16 or PCIe 3 x8, will be necessary to completely feed the 7970. 16GB/sec (PCIe 3 x16) appears to be overkill for a single card at this time, and 4GB/sec or 2GB/sec will bottleneck the 7970 depending on the game. The good news is that even at 2GB/sec the bottlenecking is rather limited, and based on our selection of benchmarks it looks like a handful of games will be bottlenecked. Still, there’s a good argument here that 7970CF owners are going to want a PCIe 3 system to avoid bottlenecking their cards – in fact this may be the greatest benefit of PCIe 3 right now, as it should provide enough bandwidth to make an x8/x8 configuration every bit as fast as an x16/x16 configuration, allowing for maximum GPU performance with Intel’s mainstream CPUs.

Take a look at the new Sniper gaming board from Gigabyte:
http://youtu.be/twI4wcOKOZw

So bottom line I think I'm trying to convince myself to go with the cheaper Z77 chipset with a 2700 OC vs the X79 with 3930 6 core OC machine. Or maybe the best idea is to wait for Haswell due around Q2 2013...

Haswell is set for release March-June 2013

What do you think?
